About me

Who is cooking in myNaturopath Kitchen?

Mostly me, Ingrid Gilmour ... mother, Naturopath and health coach. I have been in the health industry for what seems like my entire adult life. The irony is when I left school I originally wanted to become a genetic engineer but due to an ethics subject that was compulsory at Uni, I discovered that my chosen career was fraught with issues I could and would not learn to ignore. I was convinced in the face of no evidence at that time (this was 1992) that genetic altered food would be detrimental to our health. Look what we know now!!

So I left Uni and went to Nature Care College and studied Naturopathy. To fund my way I started work in Russells Natural Food Market Chatswood. I still remember my first day quite clearly ... there was row upon row of food that I had never heard of before and I had absolutely no idea what to do with it. Over time I would try each ingredient out find ways to use it and if It was disgusting donate it to the garbage! Mostly I loved this new world of fabulous nutritious ingredients like seaweeds, miso, tamari, lecithin and so on. Best thing from this job was meeting my future husband Peter. We then bought our own store in Nowra in 2000 and continue to run this as well as our clinic, myNaturopath Clinic, to this day.

We have two beautiful children who are growing up knowledgable about food and know what is good and what is not. Sometimes they can be embarassing, like yelling at a party "but the sausage is covered in red skin and you said that is very bad for you" but I am ever proud of them as they stand true to a natural way of eating with some treats. I know they are yet young and think I am the fount of all knowledge. I am sure when we head into teenage years that this view point will change. But hopefully my passion rubs off!

This blog is a place for all my kitchen experiments, my love of the Thermomix and raves about ingredients ... both good and evil.

It has all come about due to my husband (fellow Naturopath) pestering me non stop for over ten years to produce a cookbook for all his clients. Not ready to go there!! I just cook good food from scratch and avoid various ingredients which change according to family issue, diet we are following and what I am craving. Yes I am the kitchen boss! What I want typically gets made.

Over the years I have personally followed many eating plans for various reasons: weight loss, curiosity, health issues and just a side effect of being a foodie Naturopath.
Diets I have followed for various periods of time over the years include: Candida diet, Blood type diet, Zone diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Body Ecology, Raw food, Ketosis, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, GAPS, paleo, sugar free, grain free ... and so the list goes on.

I am a big believer that no one diet is the answer to anyones problem. We are all individuals with different genetic makeup and wildly varied environments. But without starting somewhere, you can’t find what works for you. By experimenting with many different eating styles I have finally came to the conclusion that I am indeed a bitsa and as my body ages (yes we all age) and the environment changes around me then these eating habits will continue to change. On the whole this is probably true of everybody.

So on reflection I realise that the recipes that will be posted over time will sometimes be gluten free, sometimes paleo, sometimes vegan ... in a nut shell, they will vary. They will be recipes that work for me and my family ... I am a big believer of never making a recipe again if it didn’t work out. Waste of time, energy and ingredients!

Enjoy!
